In my experience these kinds of things are not easy.

It's not the code that is difficult, the patch would probably be very
simple. The problem is that it requires some time to learn how
libraries actually work.

This for most people is not fun, and I suspect Adium developers do not
care about anything else but the UI, which should actually be ok.
Somebody else should take the time to make a proper libpurple library
on OS X so Adium guys don't need to bother compiling and hacking it,
just link to it.

Regarding libpurple there are quite many *should be*s.
