OK, I think it's about time I chime in, as I've been following/coding
for IM clients for the iPhone for a while now.
libgaim compiles for the iPhone. The page "Wickedpsyched" was from a
guy named "core". He was the original dev that got libpurple working
for the iPhone, and he's on the jailbreak team as well if I remember
correctly.
My personal opinion is that libgaim is too heavy on the iPhone, but it
can be done.
Next, I'd like to address WKMV. It's entirely possible on the iPhone,
and actually is in use in at least one project that I know of.
As to not reinvent the wheel, http://code.google.com/p/xmppframework/
works on the iPhone, so it may be worth looking at.
