As a party to the conversation, what I recall is that it went much  
like this thread is going: the vast majority of useful Plugins would  
be excluded, so none of the adium devs present thought it would be a  
good use of their time to hack on this. However we repeatedly said  
that we would help if someone were interested.

As far as the prpl Plugins, some sort of wrapper will be required  
simply to tell Adium things about the service that it cannot glean  
from libpurple -- icons at the proper sizes, if it should participate  
in certain UI behaviors (offline messaging). It is not a lot of code.  
As for that requiring a developer to have a mac, that's a good thing  
IMO. As a user, I would not want to use a plugin if the author could  
not test (and therefor support) my OS.
