Just to be sure everyone knows this bit. When Adam redid the download  
page, the intention was so that it was clear where to click.  
Originally there was the big duck, a download link, and the protocol  
icon bar was added. We had a few complaints, but people stopped asking  
where to download Adium at from the main page, which was the  
intention. I don't remember if we moved to this from the orange design  
or if there was an interim design, but that's how we judged the  
redesign as being positive.

What I originally asked Adam was "what problem are you trying to  
address?". I don't know that I see any problems with the main download  
page that the mockup you linked to addresses, other than an update in  
colors, so imho it'd be harder to judge simply like we did before.

I guess I'm wondering what's trying to be addressed here. :)
