As long as the codecs are in ffmpeg, you could piggy back onto it with
perian pretty easily. If not, find a library, get it into perian, and then
you have a solution to the codec problem. Assumedly Adium would be using
quicktime to actually display the video, and I've seen code to load Perian
only when the application launches. At least, that's one way I believe that
it could be done.
