Seconded. A bookmarked group chat would be perfect for this. If you  
leave the bookmarked group chat window open, it gives you your recent  
timeline; if you send a message into it, it posts it as an update.

(Anybody who doesn't use Twitter will have no idea what those nouns  
mean.)
