We (the XMPP developer community) have been working hard to deprecate 
jabber:iq:version, mostly because it's evil to send out a version 
request to everyone in your contact list every time you log in (and the 
bigger the contact list, the greater the evil). The replacement 
technology is Entity Capabilities:

I know that Tobias Markmann has been working on XEP-0115 support in 
libpurple, so hopefully the days of supporting jabber:iq:version in 
Adium and Pidgin may be numbered.
