Sounds nice, I could see this as being very useful.

Indeed. I think we can kill around 16 birds with one stone here. I
could definitely see 1.3 being the "Bottom-Bar" update, and I think
that this notification system, along with searching and sorting would
be three good candidates for such a thing. It has the added bonus of
not needing to change contact list styles, however it may have an
effect on Borderless users, and the design of a bottom bar for those
types of users would be interesting, but we're all smart people eh?
It'd be even better if we could integrate all of these with Growl (if
we don't already). Perhaps even by default for all Growl
installations (once again, if we don't already).
