Another good place to ask for ideas is on Adium's IRC channels at 
freenode.net - #adium , #adium-dev


I am hoping you are already somewhat familiar with Objective-C and 
Cocoa. If not you'll have to factor in how much time
it will take for you to learn those. I think there is a transition to 
Leopard soon so you might want to find out if or how that might
affect any contributions you intend to make.

Note that you picked a really good OS  project to work on. From my 
experience, adium-devs are really helpful and the user
community is really active as well. Its for those reasons that I am 
thinking of doing a similar project with Adium  during final semester at 
college .
