When you're working with a bunch of people, all over the globe, on a volunteer-only basis, you really can't make demands and deadlines. Part of getting paid to work versus volunteering is the idea that you share your time with a group and the project when not getting paid, rather than dedicating your time because you are paid. I can understand the idea of wanting to be more 'strict', which basically means more professional, but the actual definition of professional conflicts with the volunteer idea. (definition #2 of professional: [of a person] engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime )
Unless all the devs and contributers start getting paid to set their own time aside to work on Adium, there is no reason or right to set deadlines or make demands of them. People can only contribute what their time allows them to, because this is NOT a job for anyone, it's a side-project.. a pastime, a hobby, etc. I don't mean to belittle the project, but it can't be a stiff-collared, deadline-making, demand-answering professional project when it is run solely on volunteers who donate their time. If you want a more mature and professional thing here, then figure out how to pay the devs. Otherwise, don't expect people to treat this as they would treat their actual paying jobs.
I read and understood where everyone is coming from, and what you all want, but you're simply not being realistic here.
I think that Adium is doing great as is, and the fact that so many people contribute to the application with ease, and all the code from everyone gets bundled up in a pretty (and working) package is simply amazing.
I just wanted to add my 1/2 cent (I don't get 2 cents, I know). I think I'm just thinking about poor Evan and having to juggle med school, personal life, and Adium all at once. Well, actually... I'm thinking about the poor patients Evan is practicing on, as I'm sure they'd like the man that has their life in his hands to be more dedicated to his JOB and not worried about his hobby and the deadlines for it. What if Evan was in the middle of trying to deliver a baby (are you still on your OB rotation?) and he had a baby's head in his hands, ready to come out, when all the sudden Evan remembers that there is a deadline to fix ____ (fill in the blank) in Adium by tomorrow night and he then drops some little baby because he realized he didn't even start to work on things for ____ problem yet! I don't think that baby's mom will be too happy to hear Evan was distracted because he had a deadline with Adium. Nope... Evan would get punched out, and have
lawsuit papers laying on his chest when he comes to.
Just think about it guys... just think.
