Some people in those meetings don't have solid IRC experience, so  
they can't follow the typical IRC-speed :)

Don't forget that some people attending the meetings aren't in the US  
time zones. It's already at 3am/4am (depending on the daylight  
savings switch) in my time zone, which is very late, esp considering  
that they go on for 1-2h.
I won't be able to attend them until July, since I have a lecture  
starting at 10am every friday, and I need at least 6h of sleep to be  
in any usable state for the day.
