Strong agree. There is absolutely no excuse not to be checking in
code at a minimum of once per week. Incomplete? Broke something since
last week? That's still fine; version control exists for a reason.
We should make sure students understand subversion and how to create
branches (which of course are just copies... we're not using anything
more dynamic and flexible... yet...) and make it clear that while they
in no way should feel obligated to branch their SoC branch, they are
very much welcome to use version control in whatever way is best for
their workstyle, which can include private branches if they wish.

That does sound like a good idea... though it might be a logistical
nightmare if we did so with all potential candidates. Perhaps
interviewing our top 10 candidates based on their applications would
be effective?
