Hope I am just stating the obvious here, but have you looked at  
Colloquy?  It has been a few years since I have used it, but IIRC,  
message styles provide (css selector, name, type) tuples, and the UI  
adds the ability to change these.

I am not a fan of the drawer used in Colloquy (assuming they haven't  
change it yet), but I like the rest of it.
