I can definitely see the benefit of forcing it on for consistency with
vertical tabs. A simple solution might be to have a checkbox that is
automatically disabled and checked when a vertical orientation is set.
I wouldn't really mind with getting rid of the option if 1.0 didn't
already behave that way. It would probably annoy a whole lot of people
who are used to no overflow menu. That's it, no more arguments from me
:)

An alternative to overflow menu could be a short sentence like "Show a
menu when many conversations are open," except no so terribly worded.
Many doesn't really convey the proper meaning, but I can't think of a
better word right now.
