I haven't the stomach for a prefs argument; there's already a lot  
going on in the advanced messages preferences, and i think this one  
could go back and forth infinitely.  I'm okay with bringing it back...

I think the previous pref is probably a bit confusing in user-land,  
though.

(1) "Overflow menu"?  I wonder if we can come up with a phrase that  
more clearly explains what's going on.
(2) vertical tabs always use the overflow chevron... do we  
communicate that in prefs somehow?  do we just ignore the fact that  
the pref will be ignored when vertical?
