What does that mean, "hasn't been maintained at all"?  It connects  
and sends messages on all modern Jabber servers. I'd really  
appreciate it if you could elucidate this statement a bit more --  
Gaim claims to have a great Jabber implementation and to be a full- 
featured Jabber client, and regardless of whether Adium is using  
libgaim or not it is a Good Thing for us to encourage improvement on  
the biggest open source messaging client out there.  A laundry list  
of deficits would be a good start :)
