{branch} is indeed 1.8 only, or at least, not in 1.7.2.

I figured; I recall the vaguely recall old named branches stuff being referred to in the past tense back when I started messing around -- I don't recall how it worked though (I'm curious about how it worked, mind talking about that off-list?)
