Okay, I was able to get some more information on this:
22:19:58 John Bailey: in one of the header files in the msn prpl there's a define for CLIENT_ID or something similar
22:20:25 John Bailey: I *think* just setting the max protocol to 15 will still cause other official clients to be stupid and try p2pv2
22:21:41 John Bailey: it should be relatively easy to review the mtn history for the file to find a previous ID we used that would work

By the way, I have the feeling I'm seeing less contact icons and more of the "unknown-image question marks" after http://hg.adium.im/adium-1.4/rev/fc44da247ca2, especially for chats that are restored thanks to "Reopen chats from last time on startup" feature when Adium is started.
