Plus then you're not only in the client-coding business but also the
IM-service business. And speaking from experience at the jabber.org
service I can say that the latter is not always fun because people
expect an always-on server (which can be difficult to maintain because
if your server is prominent it *will* be attacked).

But I don't mean to discourage you. :)

What if you spread the load around so that you had a handpicked list of
recommended servers in different parts of the world?
