That's not entirely true -- xhtml has support for it:

http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-bidi-css-markup

which means that you can send the information via XMPP, as long as the  
receiving client is able to use the formatted version of the message.

However, I guess Adium doesn't support that yet (and I also guess that  
no other XMPP client does).
