This has been very effective for us.  In addition to filtering on  
regex, it can also puts posts through akismet (which we also use).   
For the occasional spammer that still gets through, we started  
adopting the strategy of putting the site they advertise in the regex;  
thus killing every post that mentions it.

In addition, the following lines are very useful as spammers figured  
out that trac doesn't filter css:
display:.*none
position:.*absolute
