I like this idea. Expand+Fadeout and a fade to red. Slickkk.

For SMS, initially it would only display the count (160). As it rolls  
over from 0 to 160, a second bubble would slide+fade out of it with  
the number 2 inside it. That way, it's clear that this bubble with 2  
in it came from the character counter and isn't just randomly  
appearing for no reason.
