A third possible UI for the character counter:

Show the character count in a bubble (dock-badge style) with a light  
blue background which gradually changes as you get closer to the  
character limit.  If you actually hits it, it does the expand-contract  
animation to get your attention; it would act similarly if ticking- 
over to the next message (in the SMS case).
