*nod* A happy coincidence of building-in-place. By default, pidgin and  
libpurple build within the source tree, creating Makefiles and putting  
object files alongside the source.  Adium's purple_make.sh puts built  
products (including produced Makefiles) in a build directory separate  
from the source.
