Because the original show-stopper is that apps couldn't run in the  
background. This solves that problem! I have MobileChat on my iPhone  
right now, but I rarely use it because I have to sign in, then when I  
head out of a wifi zone I get disconnected. I would find this  
extremely useful - this is exactly how it works on the Blackberry -  
people get notifications when someone has messaged them via the IM  
service.

I don't see why not... sure there will be lots of requests, but it's a  
pretty small amount of data to just push a notification. That is,  
compared to full messages, etc.
