Yes :) There's supposed to be handling for an error response being  
just as good as a ping response, and I've certainly seen it work  
before... as otherwise Google Talk would disconnect immediately.  
However, it also seems to fail in some cases.

Let's plan on releasing with the invalid-xml-sending fix, the  
xmpp:ping fix if possible, and Mark's recent change which should  
hopefully fix #8834 [1] by 0900 EST tomorrow (Friday) morning.

I've just committed Mark's change and some associated debug logging to  
both trunk and adium-1.2.
