Different bug, I think, but similar-looking underlying issue, so I  
thought I'd just make people aware that it might be bigger than just  
certificates -- or they might, indeed, be unrelated.  (For example,  
if the general intent is to authenticate the connection to a specific  
connection manager, then that has specific implications for both  
certificate checking and for Kerberos use.  If there's no single  
model for it, they might be specified to behave differently.  Sorry,  
like I said, I've only started looking into the specs.)

I haven't opened a ticket yet, because I haven't gone through and  
figured out if the 1.2 behavior has the same lossage, or indeed  
whether it's technically broken.  And the server I'm using has an old  
OpenFire bug that doesn't play nicely with Adium, and either that  
problem is intermittent, or something weird is happening on the Adium  
side whereby that bug is bypassed if I change the account config in  
Adium and then change it back to what I started with.  So I've got a  
few issues to untangle.  I'm hoping to figure it out and file reports  
this weekend.
