If I'm liable to forget to change the email field on my own, why am I  
any more likely to remember to use a script to do my clones, instead  
of typing in hg clone just like everywhere else?

And it's not just me -- anyone from outside wouldn't understand that.  
Why add more complexity? Wasn't one of the reasons we chose Mercurial  
was that it had a shallow learning curve and was simple?
