You folks are definitely forgetting the most useful feature, the "swap":

1) type text
2) control-s
3) type new text / return
4) control-s / return

Control-S is a single keyboard shortcut which swaps the text in the  
input field with the contents holding bin (like the clipboard, but  
not). The same shortcut swaps them back. I use this daily to  
interrupt a longer bit of text, so that I can write a short reply to  
something else.

I actually don't like Control-Up and Control-Down so much, as they're  
the same as Control-S unless you need a LOT of stored lines. I think  
that Control-S is much more elegant, VERY fast, and easier to explain.
