I wouldn't worry too much about that angle of any proposal; really,  
changing to a different version control system, from a non- 
administrator perspective, is trivial, disregarding new abilities  
added by a version control system.  "Go to website and download the  
precompiled binary. Now copy the following commands from our  
instructions and paste them into Terminal.  Here are the basic  
conversions between subversion and XXX terminology: foo = bar."  
Subversion, with its CVS heritage, is the lowest common denominator of  
VCSs, so far as I can tell.
