I haven't been able to reproduce these reported Growl problems.  The  
only report I've actually seen of it has been that System Preferences  
didn't automatically quit and restart appropriately so the Growl  
preference pane didn't work until that was done manually... there are  
considerable failsafes in place which are supposed to handle this in  
Growl-WithInstaller, so I'm pretty befuddled by that for starters.

It'd be nice to be able to actually fix the issue and ship with an  
updated Growl.   Can we get a description of what "broke Growl" means,  
what versions of OS X are affected, what error messages (if any) are  
involved, etc?

We definitely should either fix the issue or revert to Growl 0.7.x  
until someone can fix (after reproducing) the installation issues.
