In case anyone wants numbers:

du -b *.dmg
*.zip                                                      %/tmp(0)
14598812        Adium 1.0.2-UDBZ.dmg
16039926        Adium 1.0.2-UDZO9.dmg
45649524        Adium_1.0.2.zip

UDZO and zip both invoked with -9.

One thing that I remembered just now is that Finder actually does
much better at zipping things than zip(1) does. I don't know exactly
why—perhaps it uses zlib internally—but it's just barely behind the
disk images, unlike zip(1):

du -b *.dmg
*.zip                                                      %/tmp(0)
14598812        Adium 1.0.2-UDBZ.dmg
16039926        Adium 1.0.2-UDZO9.dmg
17236235        Adium 1.0.2-Finder.zip
45649524        Adium_1.0.2.zip

But UDBZ still wins.
