I really dislike Colloquy's implementation of the  userlist for a room  
be a a sub list of the list of rooms. I might be convinced were an  
alternate implementation presented, but as it stands, it's really  
cumbersome and tough to use with a large number of channels/tabs  with  
a moderate amount of users in them.

However, I can't think of any better UIs, other than putting the group  
chat on the right -- and i don't think we want a three column layout  
for our message view.
