Originally messages weren't on separate lines, because XML (unlike  
HTML) is sensitive to whitespace. I think this got changed somewhere  
along the way, and if Tim "XML" Bray says it's fine, then it's fine.

I probably should figure out exactly where the newlines are getting  
inserted though. They don't seem to be getting added after <chat>,  
just after individual sub-elements.
