I know Mark is on this list, and maybe he'll offer more insight.
As I recall, the OSCAR server-stored list is versioned (or
timestamped... or both?), and that timestamp is saved in the version
of the list that libpurple locally caches. If libpurple sees that the
server's contact list is more recent than the locally cached version,
it would use the servers, otherwise it would use the local one.
If Adium is doing something to prevent this flow, that might cause an issue.
