This is precisely what we did in Fire.  We treated the room much like  
a buddy, and users didn't have issues differentiating their use  
(since they had a different icon).  Interestingly enough, we called  
the class BookmarkItem (where groups were GroupItem, metacontacts  
were PersonItem, and buddies were BuddyItem).

I agree.  I would group contacts/bookmarks based on their context.

We did the same.  We had the menu have the ability to add buddies,  
groups, and bookmarks.
