I think this is the cause of that, though.

It's very hard to know how to do something (change the incoming- 
message font) when the obvious way to do it (the control in the  
Messages prefs) doesn't have any effect.

The question that follows is “what other way is there to do this?”,  
which evolves into “How do I change the message font?” and gets asked  
on feedback.
