What about the feature where Adium can send an autoreply different  
from the away message? Why would we break this feature for XMPP?

What exactly is wrong with sending a message like:

"(Autoreply) I'm away from my computer."

How is this a violation of the XMPP spec? If you don't want  
autoreplies to be used, check "with a custom autoreply" box in the  
status window and leave it blank.
