How is it a violation? If my mother is on xmpp and she sends me an  
im, how will she know I'm offline? She cannot navigate a buddy list  
very well, much less a get info box, and has no intentions of  
learning how to do that. She only wants to im me, and I only want her  
to not call my cell phone because she couldn't see that I'm off to  
get 2 tacos at the corner and will return shortly.

Example usage, but still, if xmpp makes that a violation, that's just  
ugh.
