I think I've mentioned this in another email thread on this topic, or  
at least I feel like I've typed this before...

We currently have type-to-find in all lists in Adium, including the  
contact list, thanks to Ken Ferry's excellent KFTypeSelectTableView.   
This could easily be set to do a full-name search rather than an  
anchored (only the beginning of the name) search.  I had it set that  
way in a beta at one point, but people were confused as to what it  
was doing since it doesn't show any feedback as it selects.

What about having a custom box appear once you *start* typing that  
communicates a search is happening (search style widget w/ the  
magnifying glass and all).  Gaim does something similar in its buddy  
list (start typing and a box appears) and I think it gets the message  
across better than it just Happening.
