Eh, the fading in a) doesn't really work well (it's pretty slow  
looking here on an MBP) and b) is kind of redundant.

I'd say just get rid of it. I think we should change the internal name  
of that that pref though, so we can set it as on by default and not  
have to deal with old values. People seem to be able to find that  
checkbox, they keep mentioning it in bug reports.
