Exclusively doing feature based funding would definitely be a dead  
end, I agree.  One thing a friend and I were discussing the other  
night was making feature-based funding (a) a possibility, but not the  
only one and/or (b) making some set percentage (10%?) of each  
merchandise sale go into a bounty-fund, the purpose of which would be  
determined by people purchasing merch. That is, after an order  
confirmation page, you have the chance to vote for what bounty funding  
should go towards for that month.  The top vote getter would have that  
month's bounty $$ roll into its coffer.

Being able to fund someone(s) to work on Adium itself rather than  
particular features is more important, I agree. (we could hire Colin  
back from Mozilla! :P j/k, Colin)
