Precisely.  ~/pidgin/libpurple is "upstream" as far as we're  
concerned, where ~/pidgin is a monotone checkout of the pidgin source.

No significant changes to Adium's Llibpurple.framework are acceptable  
in the longterm if they can't be accepted upstream.
