By above you mean 'up' in the plane of the screen.  I was treating  
above as being out of the plane of the screen --hovering above the  
things viewed on the screen, like high noon.  That clearly isn't how  
lighting works in OS X... I was just being crazy, I think.

Anyways, I believe I've fixed both shadow related problems. The  
result, [19406] / PSMTabBarControl [55], is attached:
