I'm of the opinion that we get enough advertising as is through word of
mouth/macupdate/versiontracker/iusesthis/apple's download site that we
don't need advertising. At the very least, if we did, I would be
hesitant to choose Google Ads. The feeling I got from the MacSB mailing
list is that Google Ads is not effective for the Mac market. If we
consider a sales conversion with Adium to be from turning someone from a
downloader to a steady user, I don't think Google Ads is going to aid us
there.
We're well on the way to 1 million downloads with 1.0. At least that's
the warning I'm giving to all the folks hosting our stuff, and what the
numbers are starting to indicate with just the beta. I don't think we
should spend money that we've been donated on advertising when we can do
things like bounties and what not instead. Or we could hold onto it for
something later, rainy day money if you will. Either way, I don't think
advertising is the right thing to do with the money, and I don't think
it'd be an effective use of the cash.
