I don't recall such a discussion. He submitted his IM handle, I don't  
see how it's freaky to IM him, as long as you don't just say "hi."  
Here's a better example: "hi, I'm one of the Adium developers. you  
submitted a crash report and gave us this IM handle to contact you  
with. Mind if I ask you a few questions?"
