We have a similar ticket:

Our take is that logging should never be lossy. Plain-text logging is  
lossy. So, no plain-text logging.

As for searching from the command-line: It shouldn't be that hard to  
write a Python script or XSLT style-sheet to extract the plain text  
if you really want it. And I don't think it is, in our current design  
for the log format.
