They look Dremeled into a solid sphere. Looks good to me.

One alternative is to put (blue?) spheres into those sockets.

To clarify, the sign in Paul Wilde's icon is Do Not Enter, not a  
prohibitory sign. Do Not Enter seems appropriate, but without a  
bubble to indicate chat, what entry is being blocked?

I think the Paul Wilde version is fine as it is.
