A giant no sign doesn't seem that clear, I think the proposed
suggestion is a clear indication that chatting (the bubble) is
disabled (the badge). The badge could be a bit bigger for clarity at
lower resolution(s), but thats IMHO.

As to the duck -

1. I like the duck, don't get wrong, we chill on the weekends.

2. That said... look at the visceral reaction (negative) the duck
engenders. From the sound files to the default icon to the various
places it occurs he is everywhere by our design and in a lot of
cases, this can't even be changed. Thus we force our preference on
everyone.

3. Mascot or theme, too much of a good thing is too much of a good
thing. Automator has a great mascot/icon/theme/thing in Otto, but you
see him in all of 1 or 2 spots. Subtle, but there. Adium the Duck is
absolutely in front, in our decided locales and styles without recourse.

4. Look through the screenshots thread. A fair number go out of their
way to get rid of the default icons that include the duck, modifying
package contents and whatnot above and beyond the call of duty
because it gets in their way/on their nerves.

5. Adium may buck the trend by being so customizable, but it doesn't
mean we need to snub every convention. Semi-standard icons that fit
make our custom parts stand out that much more.

My votes/suggestions:

- increase visibility of no badge on icon
- leave duck on the contact icon [subtle enough not to effect anyone]
- replace shadow duck man with shadow man for conformity
- leave the info icon as the I, most will recognize it much more
quickly without guessing or waiting for tooltips
