Just to butt in a second -- I, too, keep information such as aliases
and notes for people who aren't on my buddy list. I'm probably in the
minority (in terms of all users) in trying to keep my buddy list as
small and condensed as possible, but although I like to specify an
alias (and possibly a note) for anyone who contacts me, I might not
necessarily want to have them show up on my buddy list.
